Govt hits the accelerator on EVs

April 23, 2026 (MLN): EV adoption is set to be fast-tracked nationwide as the government moves to cut fuel imports, strengthen energy security, and reduce environmental impact through electric transport.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, chairing a meeting in Islamabad, directed authorities to accelerate implementation of the National EV Policy and ensure transparent subsidies for low-income groups, particularly for electric motorcycles, Radio Pakistan reported.

The meeting was briefed that 72 manufacturing certificates have been issued for electric motorcycles and rickshaws, while four have been granted for electric cars.

They added that 123 applications have been received for setting up EV charging stations across the country.

The government plans to shift 30% of vehicles to electric power within five years, a move expected to save around $4.5 billion in fuel imports.

It was also informed that electric bikes will be provided to government employees up to grade 16 on easy installment plans to support wider EV adoption
