July 21,2025 (MLN): In a historic move toward inclusive green mobility and economic empowerment, the government has dedicated a 25% quota for women and over 100,000 electric bikes and 300,000 electric rickshaws/loaders under its newly launched electric vehicle (EV) scheme.

A comprehensive national initiative has been unveiled to promote EV adoption in Pakistan, aimed at reducing fuel imports, protecting the environment, and strengthening the local auto industry.

Under the new plan, top-performing students will receive free electric bikes, while unemployed individuals will be provided with electric rickshaws and loaders on easy terms, said a press release.

Chairing a high-level meeting, the Prime Minister emphasized that transitioning to EVs would save billions in foreign exchange and significantly contribute to sustainable development.

He directed the immediate preparation of a government-level action plan to ensure widespread accessibility of EVs for the general public.

Additionally, unemployed youth will be prioritized for the distribution of electric rickshaws and loaders, enabling them to earn livelihoods and contribute to the economy.

Highlighting inclusivity, it was stressed that individuals from low-income backgrounds must be prioritized.

The meeting was informed that this support system will make EVs affordable and accessible across the country.

As a result of this initiative, four new battery manufacturing companies are beginning operations in Pakistan, expected to generate new business opportunities and employment nationwide.

Strict safety and quality standards will be enforced for all EVs distributed under the scheme, with third-party validation to ensure transparency and accountability.

To educate the public, a nationwide awareness campaign will be launched soon.

The premier stressed the need for swift implementation of the scheme and emphasized building a full-fledged ecosystem for EV manufacturing, maintenance, and infrastructure within Pakistan.

The meeting was attended by key government figures, including Federal Ministers Ahad Khan Cheema and Attaullah Tarar, Special Assistant Haroon Akhtar, Chief Coordinator Mosharraf Zaidi, and senior officials.

The EV plan reflects the government’s commitment to green mobility, youth empowerment, and economic revitalization.
