Government to power Gwadar Port with solar grids

August 27, 2025 (MLN): Gwadar Port is set to shift towards
solar power as part of a government plan to enhance efficiency and resolve the
city’s persistent energy challenges.
The development came during a meeting on the port’s
operationalization, where Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid
Anwar Chaudhry emphasized that the government is moving swiftly to reduce
Gwadar’s reliance on external power sources, said a press release issued today.
He confirmed that a dedicated sub-committee has been formed,
comprising representatives from the Ministry of Energy, Ministry of Maritime
Affairs, Federal Board of Revenue, Gwadar Port Authority, Gwadar Development
Authority, Quetta Electric Supply Company, and the Prime Minister’s Office.
The committee will review technical aspects of solar power
implementation, recommend photovoltaic systems with storage solutions, and
ensure reliable power distribution for critical infrastructure, including the
port authority and water facilities.
Under the Prime Minister’s Solar Initiative, solar-based
macro grids are planned for strategic sites, including water pumping stations
and the 1.2 MGD desalination plant, with battery storage to guarantee
uninterrupted supply.
The minister noted that the initiative would not only enable
Gwadar’s self-sufficiency in power but also support new factories in the free
zone and the Gwadar International Airport.
Gwadar’s water crisis, largely caused by insufficient
electricity to operate pumping and desalination plants, could also be
alleviated through the solar plan.
Stored reserves are available but cannot be effectively
distributed without adequate power.
Chaudhry highlighted the fisheries sector stating that it
alone could save over a million dollars annually by switching from diesel and
unreliable grid electricity to solar power.
He stressed that reliable solar energy is essential for reducing costs, safeguarding local livelihoods, and boosting Gwadar’s export competitiveness.
