September 30, 2025 (MLN): The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has officially refuted circulating reports claiming an extension for the Income Tax Returns filing deadline for Tax Year 2025, calling such claims "false, baseless, and misleading."

In a strongly-worded clarification issued today, FBR addressed unverified reports on various media platforms that suggested the tax return deadline would be extended, with some sources attempting to connect this perceived extension to recent floods in Pakistan.

"These reports are categorically false," the FBR statement read. "The deadline for filing Income Tax Returns for Tax Year 2025 will not be extended."

The revenue authority emphasized that a vast majority of Pakistani taxpayers reside in areas completely unaffected by the recent floods and have had sufficient time to fulfill their national obligation of filing returns.

"Taxpayers have had ample time to discharge their responsibilities," FBR officials stated, dismissing flood-related concerns as grounds for a blanket extension.

FBR also addressed rumors regarding technical difficulties with its online filing platform. Reports suggesting that the IRIS (Integrated Revenue Information System) system has slowed down were described as "unfounded."

"FBR's IRIS platform is fully operational and functioning smoothly," the authority confirmed. "Taxpayers can easily file their returns using the new simplified income tax return form without any technical issues."

The tax authority issued a stern warning to taxpayers who fail to meet the September 30, 2025 deadline.

Non-compliance will result in late-filer status being assigned to the taxpayer, imposition of penalties as prescribed under tax law, and legal consequences for continued non-compliance.

"FBR urges all eligible taxpayers to act responsibly and file their Income Tax Returns with accuracy and honesty before the deadline," the statement emphasized.

While ruling out a general extension, FBR clarified that taxpayers facing extreme hardship can apply for individual relief.

Such taxpayers may avail a 15-day extension beyond the September 30 deadline, subject to specific conditions.

Due taxes must be paid by September 30, 2025, and the extension request requires approval by the relevant committee as per legal provisions for extreme hardship cases.

The Federal Board of Revenue called upon all eligible taxpayers to file returns before the September 30 deadline, ensure accuracy and honesty in their declarations, avoid relying on unverified media reports, and utilize the simplified return form available on the IRIS platform.

Tax experts advise taxpayers to complete their filings immediately to avoid last-minute technical difficulties or complications that may arise from high traffic on the final day.
