November 24, 2025 (MLN):   Brazil hosted COP30 in Belem, where countries agreed on a sweeping climate finance package aimed at scaling up support for the Paris Agreement, mobilizing at least $1.3 trillion per year by 2035.

Further tripling adaptation finance, and operationalizing the loss and damage fun but stopped short of committing to phase out fossil fuels, APP reported.

The summit, the first COP held in the Amazon, also launched the Global Implementation Accelerator and the Belem Mission to 1.5°C to help countries meet their nationally determined contributions (NDCs) and adaptation plans.

For the first time, negotiators acknowledged the need to tackle climate disinformation, pledging to promote information integrity and counter narratives that undermine science-based action.

While the Climate Action Network International (CAN) praised the adoption of the Just Transition mechanism as a rights-based milestone, it criticized COP30 for weak outcomes in areas critical to vulnerable and frontline communities.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva called the summit “the COP of truth,” and COP30 President Andre Correa do Lago pledged roadmaps to halt deforestation and ensure a just transition away from fossil fuels.

The talks faced disruptions, including Indigenous blockades demanding stronger Amazon protections and a fire in the main conference hall during critical negotiations, but delegates worked through the night to reach a politically viable agreement focused on finance and implementation.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized that while COP30 achieved progress, it fell short of what is needed to prevent overshoot of the 1.5°C target, urging continued global action and solidarity.
