January 28, 2026 (MLN): Pakistan and Australia are exploring expanded bilateral cooperation in the mining and gemstones sectors, with a focus on investment, technical collaboration, and long-term partnerships, as interest from Australian mining companies in Pakistan’s mineral potential continues to grow.

The discussion took place during a meeting between Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik and the newly appointed Australian High Commissioner to Pakistan, Timothy Kane, according to a press release issued.

During the talks, the federal minister highlighted Pakistan’s vast untapped mineral resources, particularly in the Tethyan Belt, and welcomed the strong interest shown by Australian companies.

He proposed the possibility of an Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) between the two countries to ensure structured and long-term cooperation in the mining sector.

He also emphasized government efforts to formalize the gemstones sector, citing its potential for value addition, exports, and job creation.

The Australian high commissioner noted that Australian companies are already actively engaged in the Reko Diq project, with more firms expressing interest in joining.

He said Australian companies would be encouraged to participate in the upcoming Pakistan Minerals Investment Forum (PMIF) and expressed hope for a strong Australian presence at the event.

Emphasizing the growing global demand for copper and gold amid the energy transition, the high commissioner observed that Pakistan’s mining sector has drawn significant international attention.

He expressed optimism about collaboration in the gemstones sector through knowledge sharing, training, and technical assistance.

The federal minister appreciated Australia’s support in Pakistan’s efforts to formalize its mineral sector, calling the cooperation timely and reassuring.

He also recalled his recent visit to Australia for the International Mining and Resources Conference (IMARC), where he held productive meetings with major and junior Australian mining companies to discuss investment and cooperation opportunities.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening Pakistan-Australia cooperation in the mining and gemstones sectors for mutual benefit.
