April 15, 2026 (MLN): Pakistan has called for stronger global
cooperation and urgent de-escalation of geopolitical tensions, warning that
ongoing conflicts particularly in the Middle East are placing severe strain on
the world economy.
These remarks were made by Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue, Muhammad Aurangzeb, during his participation in the World Bank-IMF Spring Meetings 2026, where he attended the Group of 24 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors’ Meeting as First Vice Chair, according to a press release issued.
He highlighted how recent shocks have disrupted energy
supplies, fertilizer markets, and financial conditions, stressing that
protecting key trade and energy routes is critical to maintaining global
stability.
The minister also urged greater flexibility in
international financial systems to help developing economies manage risks while
sustaining growth and employment.
During his intervention, Federal Minister for Finance Aurangzeb
reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for reforms at the International Monetary Fund,
particularly in reviewing program design and conditionality. He emphasized
maintaining macroeconomic stability while allowing policy space to tackle
emerging challenges and support inclusive growth.
The minister also called for an early and comprehensive
review of IMF surcharges, noting their disproportionate impact on developing
countries. In addition, he stressed the importance of deepening collaboration
with the World Bank in areas such as infrastructure development, job-rich
investments, and innovative financing solutions.
Reiterating Pakistan’s commitment to resilience,
inclusion, and shared prosperity, he urged the international community to work
together more effectively in addressing evolving global economic challenges.
