November 18, 2024 (MLN): Women's access to technology and the internet is utmost necessity, as they can be empowered by providing digital devices and smooth internet services, Minister of State for IT and Telecommunication Ms. Shaza Fatima Khawaja said while expressing her views on Gender Digital Divide Policy.

The Prime Minister’s Free Laptop Scheme has significantly ensured women can access digital tools, she further added.

She also stated that the government is also working on a Smartphones for All Policy to make digital devices more accessible to women nationwide.

Shaza Fatima acknowledged that social norms and cultural barriers often restrict women’s access to mobile phones and Information and Communications Technology (ICT), and the government is working to address these hurdles to create a more inclusive society.

The Minister stressed that closing the digital gender gap is not only crucial for gender equality but also for economic growth, as women’s participation in the digital economy can drive broader societal benefits.
