Gold tops $4,050 on U.S.-Iran ceasefire hopes

July 21, 2026 (MLN): Gold prices edged higher on Tuesday as investors assessed renewed diplomatic efforts between the United States and Iran, while also evaluating the potential impact of easing geopolitical tensions on inflation and the U.S. Federal Reserve's monetary policy.
Currently, spot gold is up 0.83% to $4049.25 an ounce as of
[10:02 am] PST, according to data reported by Mettis Global.
Market participants remained focused on reports suggesting
both Washington and Tehran are exploring ways to revive negotiations, raising
expectations that a de-escalation in the conflict could reduce energy-driven
inflationary pressures, according to CNBC.
The precious metal found additional support as oil prices
retreated after reports emerged of mediation efforts aimed at easing tensions
between the U.S. and Iran.
The decline came despite fresh exchanges of attacks between
the two countries and threats by Yemen's Houthi movement to impose a naval
blockade on Saudi Arabia.
The Houthis issued the warning even as diplomatic channels
appeared to remain active. A senior Iranian official told Reuters that Tehran
had received a proposal from international mediators for a 10-day ceasefire, an
initiative aimed at preserving last month's interim agreement and creating
space for broader peace negotiations.
Earlier this week, escalating hostilities had pushed oil
prices to their highest level in more than a month, reinforcing concerns that
sustained energy price increases could keep inflation elevated and delay
monetary easing.
Persistently high inflation has led some policymakers to
argue for tighter monetary policy, a factor that typically weighs on gold since
higher interest rates raise the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding
assets.
The Federal Reserve is broadly expected to leave interest rates unchanged at its upcoming policy meeting. However, futures markets indicate traders are assigning a 64% probability of a rate increase in September, according to the CME FedWatch Tool.
