Weekly SPI increases by 0.15%

May 02, 2025 (MLN): Pakistan's short-term inflation increased by 0.15% compared to the previous week, while it fell by 2.41% compared to the same period last year, the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reported on Friday.

During the week, out of 51 items, prices of 12 (23.53%) items increased, 11 (11.57%) items decreased and 28 (54.90%) items remained stable.

The SPI for the current week ended on April 30, 2025 increased by 0.15%. Major increase is observed in the prices of Eggs (5.55%), Chicken (1.84%), LPG (1.03%), Gur (0.59%), Bread (0.55%), Bananas (0.54%), Pulse Moong (0.52%), Sugar (0.26%), Rice Basmati Broken (0.18%) and Long Cloth (0.04%). 

On the other hand, major decrease is observed in the prices of Onions (5.59%), Tomatoes (4.56%), Garlic (1.78%), Pulse Mash (1.57%), Wheat Flour (1.43%), Mustard Oil (0.77%), Rice IRRI-6/9 (0.59%) and Vegetable Ghee 1Kg (0.31%).

The year on year trend depicts decrease of 2.41%, Onions (69.09%), Garlic (33.73%), Electricity Charges for Q1 (29.40%), Tomatoes (27.48%), Wheat Flour (26.64%), Potatoes (21.63%), Tea Lipton (16.98%), Pulse Mash (16.69%), Chilies Powder (13.45%), Petrol (11.62%) and Diesel (8.19%).

On the other hand, increase is observed in the prices of Ladies Sandal (55.62%), Pulse Moong (28.67%), Powdered Milk (22.26%), Pulse Gram (22.09%), Beef (18.22%), Bananas (18.18%), Sugar (16.54%), Vegetable Ghee 2.5 Kg (14.93%), Vegetable Ghee 1Kg (13.88%), Firewood (10.35%), Lawn Printed (10.33%) and Georgette (9.90%).

The lowest income group experienced a weekly increase of 0.07%, while the inflation for the highest income group up by 0.17%.

On a yearly basis, analysis of SPI change across different income segments showed that SPI remained across all quantiles ranging between 3.37% and 1.58%.

Yearly SPI for the Lowest Income Group decreased by 2.72% while the highest income group decreased by 1.58%.

The average price of Sona urea stood at Rs4,925 per 50 kg bag, up by 0.09% from last week’s price, and a 8.79% decrease from last year.

Meanwhile, the average Cement price rose to Rs1,215 per 50 kg bag, which is 0.82% higher than the previous week, and 16.97% higher than prices last year.

PBS calculates short-term inflation using the SPI on a weekly basis to assess the price movement of essential commodities at shorter interval of time so as to review the price situation in the country.

SPI comprises 51 essential items collected from 50 markets in 17 cities of the country.
