March 25, 2026 (MLN): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed relevant authorities to expedite the export of surplus food items to Gulf countries while ensuring that domestic requirements remain fully met.
Chairing a high-level review meeting in Islamabad on food
exports and Pakistan’s maritime operations amid the evolving regional
situation, the premier expressed satisfaction over the government’s export
strategy and the progress achieved so far.
He commended the performance of departments involved in
facilitating food shipments to Gulf markets, according to Radio Pakistan.
The prime minister emphasized the need for continuous
coordination with Gulf nations to meet their food requirements and strengthen
food security cooperation.
He noted that disruptions in global supply chains have
increased Pakistan’s responsibility to support friendly countries in the
region.
At the same time, he stressed strict monitoring of local
demand and supply to prevent shortages within the country. He warned that
delays in decision-making would not be tolerated and instructed that officials
responsible for bottlenecks be held accountable.
Shehbaz Sharif also called for a comprehensive plan to
enhance flight operations at major airports, including Karachi and Gwadar, to
support export logistics.
A special committee has approved 40 essential food items for
export, including rice, sugar, edible oil, meat, poultry, dairy products,
fruits, and vegetables. A dedicated database of exporters engaged with Gulf
markets has also been developed.
The meeting was informed that no additional charges would be
imposed on exports of perishable goods such as fruits, vegetables, and meat.
Shipments will be facilitated through both air and sea
routes, while business-to-business engagements and virtual meetings with Gulf
partners are ongoing.
