Rs 960/bag subsidy for urea imports to be given: Fawad Chaudhry

September 10, 2018 (MLN): Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry, while addressing a press conference after the meeting of the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC), announced that in order to give relief to the local farmers, the government has permitted 100,000 tons of import for urea and will be providing a subsidy of Rs 960 per bag.
He mentioned that the local demand for urea in the previous year has been around 5.8 million tons, and since local production results in a deficit, the remaining quantity needs to be imported.
Price of one locally produced urea bag stands at Rs 1615 while an imported bag of urea is going to be purchased at around Rs 2575. Hence to ease the burden of the farmers, the government has decided to provide a subsidy of Rs 960 per bag.
