Richards Bay coal market feels the heat

March 19, 2025 (MLN): The price of Richards Bay coal has fallen to $88.50, marking a decline of $19.35 or 17.94%.

Over the past five years, the contract's trading range has spanned from a low of $106.90 to a high of $110.35.

The contract's trading range over the past six months has remained at $107.85, with no fluctuations.

Richard Bay Coal Monthly is a futures contract that is based on the price of coal loaded at the Richards Bay Coal Terminal in South Africa.

It is traded on the ICE/EU exchange and has a contract size of 1,000 metric tonnes.

South Africa increased coal exports from the biggest terminal on the continent for the first time in seven years after an improvement in rail shipments by state-owned logistics company Transnet SOC Ltd.

Miners exported 52.1 million tons from Richards Bay Coal Terminal in 2024, a 10% rise from the previous year, according to a company presentation, as Bloomberg reported.

The shipments roughly match the amount of coal that reaches the facility by rail from inland mines.
