Punjab launches plan to tackle world’s worst smog

November 13, 2024 (MLN): The government of Punjab has introduced Punjab’s first-ever comprehensive 10-year policy to tackle smog and enhance environmental protection in the most polluted province in the country.

This policy includes short-term, medium-term, and long-term plans, with specific targets set for each sector, Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb said in a post on X.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif is personally monitoring progress to ensure accountability.

The measures include the launch of a vehicle certification regime, unprecedented in the country, and the modernization of the Punjab Environment Protection Agency to combat smog effectively.

Additionally, petrol quality checks at stations are being conducted for the first time in Punjab.

To further this mission, 1,000 super seeders have already been distributed to prevent crop residue burning, with a target of 5,000. Laws have also been updated to support anti-smog efforts, and the courts have recognized the positive changes under Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s government.

Ending smog requires not just government action but a collective shift in our behaviors and habits. Adopting global best practices, such as conducting business during daylight hours, will help.
