President asks ECP to propose dates for fresh elections

April 06, 2022 (MLN): President Arif Alvi Wednesday has asked the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to propose dates for holding general elections in the country under Article 224(2) of the Constitution within ninety days following the dissolution of the National Assembly.

In a letter by the President's Secretariat dated April 5, 2022, “The ECP has been conveyed that the clause 5(A) of the Article 48 and clause 2 of Article 224 of the constitution provide that the President shall appoint a date, not later than ninety days from the date of dissolution of the National Assembly for holding general elections.”

In order to carry out the mandate of the Constitution of announcing the date of general elections, consultation with the Election Commission is required under Section 57(1) of the Elections Act, 2017, the letter stated.

It is pertinent to note that the Supreme Court (SC) is currently hearing the matter on dismissal of no-confidence motion against the premier and the subsequent actions and orders of the prime minister and the president for the dissolution of the assembly.
