PPL, POGC make significant hydrocarbon discovery in Sindh

March 25, 2025 (MLN): Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PSX: PPL), in partnership with POGC under the Kirthar Joint Venture (POGC 70% Operator, PPL 30%), has discovered hydrocarbons from its exploratory well Rafat-1, located in District Dadu, Sindh Province.

The Rafat-1 well was spud-in on September 20, 2024, to test the hydrocarbon potential of the Pab Formation, reaching a total depth of 2,514 meters (Measured Depth) on December 18, 2024.

Based on encouraging wireline log and drilling data, Drill Stem Testing (DST) was conducted in the Upper Pab Formation, where immeasurable gas was observed at the surface, the notification issued to the local bourse.

Due to the tight nature of the reservoir, hydraulic fracturing was performed to enhance productivity.

Following the fracking job, the well was opened for clean-up at different chokes, and additional wireline perforations were carried out. The well was successfully completed, and a Completion Integrity Test (CIT) was performed.

After rig release, rigless testing was conducted, during which Rafat-1 produced gas at a rate of 1.10 MMScfd at a 48/64" choke with ~110 Psi FWHP.

The Rafat-1 discovery highlights the Joint Venture’s commitment to continuous exploration, reinforcing efforts to unlock Pakistan's hydrocarbon potential and strengthen the country's energy sector.
