October 20, 2021 (MLN): Electricity generation increased by 7.1% to 14,032 GWh (19,489 MW) during Sep'21 compared to 13,104 GWh (18,200 MW) in Sep’20.

Taking to his Twitter handle, Asad Umar, Minister for Planning, Development, Reforms and Special Initiatives said, “This is another sign of strong economic recovery continuing.”

“We have already seen very strong large scale manufacturing & exports growth. The initial reports for Sugarcane and cotton crop are very positive also,” he noted.

The rise in power generation was attributable to higher generation of Nuclear, Wind, FO, Bagasse, Coal and Hydel, as per report by Arif Habib Limited.

Source wise, the share of Hydel power generation was the largest in Sept’21, as around 36% (5,085 GWh) of electricity was generated through Hydropower plants.

This was followed by Re-gasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG) as it accounted for 19% (2,652 GWh) of the total electricity generation during the month.

With a share of 17%, power generation from coal-fired power plants was 2,393 GWh at a rate of Rs10.1/KWh, whereas, Nuclear contributed 9% (1,282 GWh) of electricity. Meanwhile, generation from Gas was 1,248GWh (9% of total generation) at a fuel cost of Rs8.3 per KWh.

Accroding to the report, Nuclear, Wind, FO, Bagasse, Coal and Hydel based power generation in the month of Sept’21 surged by 89% YoY, 32% YoY, 31% YoY, 28% YoY, 5% YoY and 4% YoY, respectively. However, solar, RLNG, Gas, and HSD based generation was down by 2% YoY, 5% YoY, 6% YoY and

Meanwhile, fuel cost for power generation increased by 65% YoY to PKR 6.80/KWh mainly due to rise in RLNG, coal, FO, Gas and HSD based cost of generation. However hydel and Wind based generation were higher compared to same month last year, the report added.

Cumulatively, during 1QFY22, power generation witnessed an upsurge of 7.9% to 15,749 GWh.
