August 26, 2026 (MLN): China’s four global initiatives present a fresh approach to international governance and could open new avenues for cooperation at a time of growing geopolitical divisions and global uncertainty, according to Mario Boselli, President of the Italy-China Foundation.

In a recent interview with Xinhua, Boselli said the initiatives reflect China’s attempt to develop coordinated responses to challenges that extend beyond national borders, as reported by APP.

He noted that the initiatives build upon China’s broader international engagement over the past decade, following the Belt and Road Initiative.

While the BRI primarily focused on economic connectivity and infrastructure development, the four initiatives expand cooperation into areas including development, security, cultural exchange and global governance.

Boselli highlighted the potential of the Global Development Initiative (GDI) and the Global Civilization Initiative (GCI) to further strengthen ties between China and Europe, particularly Italy.

According to him, the GDI’s emphasis on climate action, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, digital transformation and technological progress could create significant opportunities for collaboration in renewable energy, photovoltaic technology and energy storage.

He added that China and Italy could also deepen partnerships between universities and research institutions in fields such as biotechnology, healthcare, artificial intelligence and advanced manufacturing.

Meanwhile, the Global Civilization Initiative could encourage greater cooperation in culture, heritage preservation, higher education and youth exchanges. Boselli said Italy’s extensive cultural legacy, combined with the strong popularity of “Made in Italy” products in China, positions the country as a natural European partner for such cooperation.

Taken together, the four initiatives promote a vision of a more multipolar global order, with a greater role for emerging economies and countries of the Global South, he said.

Boselli also noted that Italy could serve as a bridge between China and Europe, supported by its tradition of engagement with China and the complementary strengths of their economies. Such a role could help advance practical cooperation in sustainable development, innovation, culture and global governance.

While acknowledging that China’s initiatives may not immediately resolve existing geopolitical tensions, Boselli said they could provide an important platform for dialogue and reflection, helping countries explore more inclusive, practical and long-term approaches to international cooperation.
