PM, IMF's Georgieva discuss economic reforms, macroeconomic stability

February 12, 2025 (MLN): Pakistan’s ongoing International Monetary Fund (IMF) program and the macroeconomic stability achieved through the government’s comprehensive economic reform agenda were discussed during a meeting between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva.
The meeting was held today at the World Government Summit (WGS) 2025, according to the official press release issued.
The discussions highlighted Pakistan’s commitment to structural reforms, fiscal discipline, and economic recovery, which have been instrumental in restoring economic stability and will be critical in driving sustainable economic growth going forward.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif underscored the progress made under the IMF’s Extended Fund Facility (EFF), which has played a key role in stabilizing Pakistan’s economy and setting it on the path of long-term financial recovery.
He reaffirmed the government’s resolve to sustain reform momentum, particularly in critical areas such as tax reform, energy sector efficiency, and private sector development.
The Prime Minister of Pakistan assured IMF Chief Kristalina Georgieva of Pakistan’s commitment to economic prudence, financial efficiency, and sustainability as essential pillars for achieving inclusive economic growth and long-term financial stability.
Georgieva praised Pakistan’s economic reforms, commending the country’s efforts in effectively implementing the IMF-supported program. She acknowledged Pakistan’s improving economic indicators, including rising GDP growth and declining inflation rates.
She recognized that Pakistan’s economy is on the path to recovery and emphasized the government’s pro-growth strategies.
The IMF Managing Director also appreciated PM Shehbaz Sharif’s leadership and personal commitment to Pakistan’s reform agenda, which has been critical in achieving economic stability and financial progress.
She reiterated the IMF's continued support for Pakistan’s economic reforms, emphasizing the importance of sustained fiscal discipline, governance improvements, and structural reforms to ensure long-term economic stability and prosperity.
In a separate statement released on social media platform X, PM Shehbaz Sharif expressed appreciation for the IMF’s continued financial support, stating that Pakistan is transitioning from macroeconomic stability to a path of sustained economic growth and prosperity.
Meanwhile, Kristalina Georgieva, in her post on X (formerly Twitter), lauded the government’s strong commitment to Pakistan’s IMF-supported reforms.
She also commended their decisive actions to pave the way for higher GDP growth and increased employment opportunities for Pakistan’s youth population.
