May 30, 2025 (MLN) To mitigate the negative impacts of climate change, a call for enhanced global action has been made by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Speaking at the International Conference on Glaciers Preservation-2025 in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, he urged developed nations to fulfill their climate-related financial commitments promptly.

He stressed that bridging the financing gap and ensuring adequate funding for climate-resilient infrastructure is essential.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif highlighted the importance of investing in early warning systems, disaster preparedness, and effective management to combat climate risks.

He underscored the critical need to protect glaciers for the wellbeing of people and environmental sustainability, noting that Pakistan is home to one of the largest glaciated regions outside the Polar areas.

He explained that nearly half of the annual flow in the Indus River system vital to Pakistan’s civilization, culture, and economy is fed by glaciers.

The five major rivers shaping Pakistan’s geography Indus, Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, and Sutlej depend on the stability of these glaciers, making the country highly vulnerable to climate changes affecting the glacial system.

Drawing attention to Pakistan’s experience with climate-induced glacial melt, he referred to the catastrophic floods of 2022 as a stark reminder of the accelerating glacier melt in the region.

He emphasized that no country has a greater stake in glacier preservation than Pakistan, as per the press release issued.

The Prime Minister also addressed the transboundary nature of water, highlighting that it connects communities, ecosystems, and cultures beyond political borders.

He condemned the “weaponization of water” and criticized India’s unilateral suspension of the Indus Water Treaty, calling it deeply regrettable.

He warned that millions of lives must not be jeopardized for narrow political objectives and declared that Pakistan will not allow its “red line” to be crossed.
