February 28, 2025 (MLN): A large-scale tree plantation event aimed at planting 100,000 trees was jointly hosted by the Capital Development Authority (CDA) and Nestlé Pakistan.
Prime Minister’s Coordinator for Climate Change, Romina Khurshid Alam, attended the event, which focused on urban forestry as a key strategy to mitigate climate change and environmental degradation.
Addressing the gathering, Ms. Romina Khurshid Alam emphasized the urgent need to tackle environmental challenges, particularly the role of urban forests in combating climate change.
“We stand at the forefront of combating climate change, and the importance of urban forests cannot be overstated," she stated.
She pointed out that rapid urban expansion leads to pollution, rising temperatures, and shrinking green spaces, making afforestation efforts essential.
She described the tree plantation initiative as a “ray of hope,” demonstrating how integrating trees into urban landscapes can help mitigate heat effects, improve air quality, and enhance biodiversity.
“Urban afforestation enhances biodiversity, providing habitats for wildlife and improving the overall ecological health of urban areas.
It offers a natural, sustainable solution to the climate crisis with long-term benefits for both the environment and public health,” she added.
She further stressed that afforestation plays a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions and mitigating climate change’s harmful effects, as per the press release.
As cities continue to grow, incorporating green spaces and urban forests is essential to counteract the environmental impact of urbanization.
Ms. Romina also acknowledged the efforts of V20 nations, particularly Bangladesh, in incorporating afforestation into urban planning to combat flooding and rising sea levels.
The V20 group consists of 58 nations most affected by climate change and advocates for stronger climate action and financial support.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to addressing climate challenges, she highlighted urban forests as a vital component of Pakistan’s environmental strategy.
“Afforestation is not only about enhancing beauty; it is a means to build healthy communities, preserve sustainable urban ecosystems, and ensure environmental resilience for future generations,” she stated.
She urged the private sector, civil society, and individuals to take inspiration from the initiative and work collectively to expand afforestation efforts, adopt sustainable land-use practices, restore urban areas, and promote environmental awareness.
She also praised CDA and Nestlé Pakistan for their leadership in strengthening urban resilience.
Concluding her address, Ms. Romina encouraged continued efforts in planting, nurturing, and protecting trees, emphasizing that “every tree planted today is a step towards a greener and more sustainable future.”
She expressed her honor in joining the event and looked forward to witnessing more such partnerships for a greener Pakistan.
