GSK's Nucala shows promise in COPD trial

September 06, 2024 (MLN): GSK PLC has reported promising results from its Phase III MATINEE clinical trial, which evaluated the effectiveness of Nucala (mepolizumab) in treating chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

The trial successfully met its primary endpoint, demonstrating a statistically significant reduction in the annualized rate of moderate to severe exacerbations in patients treated with Nucala compared to those receiving a placebo, according to Investing.com

The MATINEE trial enrolled patients with chronic bronchitis or emphysema who were already receiving optimized inhaled maintenance therapy.

These patients also had elevated blood eosinophil counts, a biomarker of type 2 inflammation, which is associated with COPD exacerbations.

The study participants were treated for up to 104 weeks, and preliminary safety results aligned with Nucala's existing safety profile.

Although Nucala is not currently approved for use in COPD in any country, the full results from the MATINEE trial will be presented at an upcoming scientific congress.

These findings are expected to support future discussions with regulatory authorities regarding potential approval for COPD treatment.
