October 13, 2024 (MLN): The government will soon be able to decrease the electricity tariffs by 8-10% per unit to provide relief to the power consumers, Minister for Power Sardar Awais Leghari said today during an interview with a private news channel.

He also warned that electricity thieves and corrupt officials will face termination from their positions starting next month.

Leghari expressed hope that reforms in the power sector would bring positive changes for the public.

He emphasized the implementation of anti-theft measures to enhance transparency and ensure reliable, affordable, and sustainable electricity for all.

The Minister reiterated a zero-tolerance policy against power theft, stating that any officers found guilty of corruption will be dismissed, regardless of when the wrongdoing occurred.

Leghari outlined steps to tackle ongoing issues in the power sector, including upgrading and repairing feeders to reduce power losses and strengthening transmission infrastructure to improve efficiency.

He also highlighted that the government is working to resolve financial challenges in the power sector by focusing on revenue generation and overhauling the taxation system.

"We are committed to ensuring the growth of the power sector," Leghari stated.

These initiatives aim to create a stronger power sector that benefits both the economy and the public.
