May 16, 2024 (MLN): Pakistan's revised trade deficit for April clocked in at $2.51 billion compared to a deficit of $2.301bn from the previous month, reflecting a rise of 9.08% MoM, according to the revised data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS).
Meanwhile, compared to April 2023's deficit of $860 million, the trade deficit has widened significantly by 2.92x YoY.
Exports dropped by 8.38% MoM to $2.352bn compared to $2.567bn in March 2024.
While imports in April 2024 inched up by 0.21% MoM to $4.865bn compared to $4.855bn in March 2024.
According to the provisional figures compiled by PBS, in Pakistani Rupees terms, exports in April 2024 amounted to Rs654.226bn as against Rs715.458bn in March, 2024 and Rs608.239bn during April, 2023 showing a decrease of 8.56% over March 2024 but increased by 7.56% over April, 2023.
Main commodities of exports during April 2024 were Knitwear (Rs90.772bn), Readymade garments (Rs81.020bn), Rice others (Rs76.438bn), Bed wear (Rs56.332bn), Cotton Cloth (Rs37.556bn), Towels (Rs22.459bn), Rice basmati (Rs21.378bn), Cotton yarn (Rs15.052bn), Madeup articles (excl towels & bedwear) (Rs14.843bn) and Fish and fish preparations (Rs12.123bn).
Imports in PKR terms in April 2024 amounted to Rs1.353 trillion (provisional) as against Rs1.3531tr in March, 2024 and Rs849.474bn during April, 2023 showing a decrease of 0.00% over March, 2024 but increased by 59.28% over April, 2023.
Main commodities of imports during April, 2024 were Petroleum products (Rs187.277bn), Petroleum crude (Rs161.733bn), Electric machinery & apparatus (Rs135.222bn), Natural gas, liquified (Rs95.650bn), Palm oil (Rs60.107bn), Iron & Steel (Rs53.175bn), Plastic materials (Rs47.458bn), Mobile Phone (Rs44.890bn), Iron and steel scrap (Rs23.099bn) and Medicinal products (Rs22.511bn).
