August 03, 2023 (MLN): Azerbaijan's representative during the latest summit in Islamabad, has expressed interest in the construction of an oil refinery in Pakistan, Azerbaijan's Energy Ministry said in a statement on its website.

Azerbaijan’s Deputy Minister of Energy Kamal Abbasov and Director of Azerbaijan Renewable Energy Agency under the Ministry of Energy of Azerbaijan (AREA) Javid Abdullayev have attended the Pakistan Mineral Investment Summit in Islamabad: “Dust to the Development” international event.

Abbasov underlined that Azerbaijan also supplies petrochemical products and urea fertilizers to Pakistan, and exports may be expanded in the near future. The deputy minister noted that discussions are underway between the relevant authorities of the countries on possible cooperation in the construction of a new oil refinery in Pakistan.

“There are opportunities to engage in the exploration of oil and gas structures in Pakistan, as well as to cooperate with relevant companies in the mining sector,” the deputy minister emphasized.

Both sides also discussed opportunities for cooperation in oil and natural gas exploration in Pakistan.

He also drew attention to the agreement signed between the governments of both countries on energy cooperation and highlighted SOCAR's activity as a reliable supplier of LNG in Pakistan during the period preceding the signing of the document.

He mentioned that the agreement signed shortly before in the field of LNG supply created great opportunities in this direction.

Azerbaijan's state energy company Socar owns two refineries, one at Azerbaijan's capital of Baku, and the other in Turkey's Aegean region of Izmir.
