Water weaponization unacceptable: Pakistan

June 18, 2026 (MLN): Any attempt to use water as a weapon is unacceptable, as water is closely linked to livelihoods, food security, agriculture, the economy and the national security of millions of people.

The remarks were made in the context of an international conference titled “Transboundary Water Resources: A Weaponized Global Commons”, held on June 18 in Brussels, according to APP.

The event is being organized by the Centre for European Policy Studies Centre for European Policy Studies in collaboration with Pakistan’s Embassy to the European Union, Belgium and Luxembourg Pakistan Embassy to the European Union, Belgium and Luxembourg.

According to the federal climate change minister, Senator Dr Musadik Malik Musadik Malik, Pakistan considers any attempt to weaponise water unacceptable, noting that access to water directly impacts the lives and livelihoods of millions of people.

The conference brings together members of the European Parliament, international law experts, diplomats, policymakers, environmental specialists and professionals from the water resources sector to deliberate on climate change, global water security, transboundary water resources, the Indus Waters Treaty and the growing geopolitical significance of water under international law.

Pakistan is expected to present its perspective on transboundary water management, climate-related challenges and the need for international cooperation to ensure the equitable and sustainable use of shared water resources.
