U.S.–Iran deal inches closer

May 06, 2026 (MLN): A fragile diplomatic opening is emerging as the United States and Iran move closer to a preliminary agreement aimed at halting hostilities, while Shehbaz Sharif has publicly welcomed parallel de-escalation efforts in the region.
According to Bloomberg, both sides are nearing a one-page memorandum of understanding designed to pause the conflict and lay the groundwork for broader nuclear negotiations.
The proposed framework includes Iran agreeing to a temporary moratorium on nuclear enrichment, while the U.S. would ease sanctions and release billions of dollars in frozen Iranian funds.
The draft also envisions easing restrictions on transit through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
Amid these developments, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed gratitude to Donald Trump for what he described as “courageous leadership” in announcing a pause in “Project Freedom” linked to the Strait of Hormuz.
In a post on X, Sharif said the move, made in response to requests from Pakistan and regional allies, could significantly contribute to stability during a sensitive period.
He also acknowledged the role of Mohammed bin Salman and Saudi Arabia in supporting de-escalation, emphasizing Pakistan’s commitment to dialogue and diplomacy as the only sustainable path forward.
However, uncertainty continues to loom. Officials caution that the terms of the proposed U.S.–Iran memo remain contingent on a broader, final agreement.
While the immediate outcome may reduce tensions, the risk of renewed conflict or a prolonged stalemate where core issues remain unresolved still lingers.
For now, cautious optimism prevails as global and regional players attempt to steer a long-standing conflict toward a more stable trajectory.
