UN encouraged by signs of US-Iran peace deal

June 14, 2026 (MLN): The United Nations has expressed cautious optimism over reports suggesting that the United States and Iran may be nearing a peace agreement to end their months-long conflict, while refraining from making any definitive assessment until an official deal is finalized.
Speaking at a regular press briefing at UN Headquarters in
New York, UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said the organization had
taken note of recent statements from both Pakistani and U.S. officials indicated
progress in negotiations, as APP reported.
He said the UN was encouraged by the overall direction of
developments but remained cautious given the sensitivity of the situation and
previous unsuccessful attempts to secure a breakthrough.
His remarks came after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif
announced that the two sides had reportedly agreed on the final text of a peace
accord aimed at ending more than 100 days of hostilities.
The conflict began in late February following U.S. and
Israeli strikes on Iranian military and nuclear facilities, which were followed
by Iranian attacks on U.S. assets in the Gulf region.
The war has significantly disrupted maritime traffic through
the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy corridor that handles a substantial
share of international oil and liquefied natural gas shipments.
The disruption has raised concerns over global supply
chains, with the UN warning of potential economic and food security
consequences if tensions persist.
According to the UN, thousands of seafarers remain stranded
aboard vessels operating in the area, while several maritime incidents have
resulted in casualties.
The organization has intensified diplomatic and humanitarian
efforts, including the appointment of veteran French diplomat Jean Arnault
as the Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy and the establishment of a task force
to facilitate the safe movement of humanitarian cargo through the strategic
waterway.
