Mamdani, Trump discuss NYC challenges

November 24, 2025 (MLN): New York Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani
met with President Donald Trump at the White House last week for a
focused conversation on the issues shaping the city’s future.
The two spoke about housing shortages, zoning barriers,
public safety, and the city’s ongoing concerns over federal immigration
enforcement, CNN reported.
The tone of the meeting was notably positive despite months
of tense exchanges.
Trump told the pair shared “more ideas in common” than
expected, while Mamdani said he aimed to establish a productive working
relationship centered on serving New Yorkers.
Mamdani used the meeting to raise concerns about stepped-up
federal immigration actions in New York.
Mamdani did not say whether Trump agreed to scale back
enforcement, but he reiterated that the city’s cooperation with federal
agencies is guided by its sanctuary city rules.
Under those policies, local law enforcement assists
immigration authorities only when individuals have been convicted of serious or
violent crimes.
“All I hoped to do in that conversation was to establish a working relationship and to have a productive meeting that focused on the work itself, focused on the people that many of the two of us know, and people across these five boroughs that we never met.” Mamdani told CNN.
Mamdani’s meeting with Trump comes against a backdrop of strong Democratic performances across the country.
U.S. Democrats recently secured major victories in New York, New Jersey, Virginia, California, and Pennsylvania, and Mamdani’s own win is considered one of the biggest upsets in recent New York City history.
His election has drawn national attention not only for its political surprise but also for the progressive agenda he promises to bring to City Hall, tackling affordability, public services, and economic stability for over a million New Yorkers.
