Govt to place QR codes on bills nationwide

March 04, 2026 (MLN): All government institutions have been directed to introduce QR codes on every bill to facilitate citizens and accelerate the transition towards a cashless economy.

On the instructions of Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, the targets are set for the digital payments system which must be achieved within the stipulated timeframe.

This emphasizes the government’s resolve to strengthen financial digitization across the country, according to a Radio Pakistan.

The directive was issued during a review meeting in Islamabad on the promotion of a cashless economy.

Addressing the meeting, the Prime Minister appreciated the government’s economic team and the State Bank of Pakistan for promoting digital transactions through the RAAST system for salaries, pensions, and direct vendor payments at both federal and provincial levels.

He praised the Ministry of Finance for enabling direct payments amounting to Rs1.6 trillion by the federal and provincial governments from July 2025 to January 2026.

The Prime Minister also commended the team of the Benazir Income Support Programme for providing relief funds to 71% of deserving beneficiaries under the Prime Minister’s Ramadan Relief Package.

The meeting was informed that the number of people benefiting from digital banking has surpassed 127 million.

Participants were also briefed on the steps taken by the Ministry of Finance, the State Bank, BISP, the Ministry of Information Technology, and other relevant institutions to promote digital payments, along with a presentation on the digital payments ecosystem dashboard.
