Sindh eyes $9m climate-resilient floating agriculture project by 2029

October 12, 2026 (MLN): The Sindh government has proposed a $9.15mn climate-resilient floating agriculture project to create 400 hectares of flood-resistant cropland across 100 waterlogged and flood-prone villages of lower Sindh by 2029.

The project aims to raise food security by 30%, train 10,000 farmers and strengthen livelihoods in communities hit by floods and prolonged waterlogging.

It plans to introduce floating farming on organic rafts to grow vegetables, herbs and grains where excess water rules out conventional cultivation.

It is expected to directly benefit 12,500 people and indirectly reach 50,000, while women are to make up 20% to 30% of trainees and women-led farmer groups are to get training and seed capital.

Official documents seen by Wealth Pakistan show the project, titled Climate Resilient Floating Agriculture Systems for Waterlogged and Flood Prone Areas of Lower Sindh, would be executed by the Sindh Environment, Climate Change and Coastal Development Department, APP reported.

The United Nations Development Programme, National Agriculture Research Centre, Sindh Agriculture University Tandojam and Sindh Agriculture Department are listed as supporting organisations.

The documents add that the initiative is among the projects processed for inclusion in the World Bank Country Partnership Framework for Pakistan for fiscal years 2026-2035.
