SBP mandates biometrics for wallet cash

July 03, 2025 (MLN): Pakistan’s digital finance sector has entered a new security phase with the implementation of biometric verification for Easypaisa and JazzCash cash transactions, effective July 1, 2025.

The move, mandated by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), is part of a broader initiative to strengthen user protection and prevent digital fraud.

With the rapid rise of mobile financial services and digital wallets across the country, platforms like Easypaisa and JazzCash have become essential tools for everyday transactions.

However, as adoption increases, the need for robust security measures has become more urgent.

Under the new SBP regulation, users must now undergo biometric verification through authorized retail agents when performing over-the-counter cash deposits and withdrawals.

This requirement ensures all physical cash transactions are traceable and secure.

To clarify public confusion, officials have stressed that no accounts will be blocked and all user funds remain secure.

The regulation applies solely to cash transactions via retailers; online transactions and wallet functions are not affected.

Equipped biometric-enabled agents across Pakistan are now verifying users during every eligible transaction.

Attempts to deposit or withdraw cash without biometric authentication will be declined.

Despite concerns raised on social media, the transition has been framed as a positive step toward transparency, safety, and improved fraud control.

By enhancing verification standards, the SBP aims to reinforce public trust in mobile wallets that serve millions of Pakistanis.
