August 07, 2026 (MLN): Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey on
Friday signed the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement, establishing a
trilateral security framework aimed at strengthening collective defence and
regional stability.
The agreement comes as the three Sunni Muslim allies of the
United States respond to escalating regional tensions that have seen Gulf
oil-exporting states targeted by missile attacks and disruptions to energy
shipments.
According to a joint statement, the pact is designed to
reinforce collective deterrence against external aggression. It states that any
armed attack on one of the three countries will be treated as an attack on all
members of the agreement.
While the statement did not outline the specific military
commitments undertaken by each country, it said the agreement seeks to enhance
collective security while promoting peace, security and stability across the
region and beyond.
A Turkish official described the agreement as "purely
defensive in nature," saying it includes a collective defence clause that
commits the three countries to mutual support only in the event of
defence-related situations, according to Reuters.
The official added that the agreement is not directed at any
particular country, remains open to other regional states, and does not replace
or override any existing bilateral or multilateral defence arrangements.
The three countries have expressed growing concern over the
deteriorating regional security environment, including the increasingly
assertive military posture of Israel and Iran, as instability continues to
challenge the region.
