August 29, 2025 (MLN): Pakistan is moving ahead with plans to collaborate with Russia on local insulin manufacturing, following a crucial meeting today chaired by Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Industries and Production, Haroon Akhtar Khan.

The high-level meeting of the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) included Russian government representative Denis Nazarov, Secretary Industries and Production Saif Anjum, and senior DRAP officials.

The discussions focused on establishing local insulin production facilities through a joint venture that could transform Pakistan's pharmaceutical landscape.

Insulin production will be implemented in phases, with bulk production and technology transfer expected within three years.

SAPM Khan emphasized that this project would "lay the foundation for a new era of bilateral relations" between Pakistan and Russia, highlighting Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's commitment to foreign investment and technology transfer.

The initiative aims to ensure better access to essential diabetes medication for Pakistani citizens while creating new business cooperation opportunities.

The project represents Pakistan's broader strategy to attract foreign investment while securing crucial technology transfer in the pharmaceutical sector.

Speaking at the meeting, SAPM Haroon Akhtar Khan stated that the proposed insulin manufacturing project with Russia would establish a new chapter in bilateral cooperation.

He emphasized Pakistan's commitment under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's leadership to ensuring foreign investment and facilitating technology transfer.

Khan noted that the joint venture would create significant opportunities for business cooperation while ensuring access to essential medicines for Pakistan's population.

He stressed that strict compliance from partner companies would be essential for the project's success.

This collaboration addresses Pakistan's significant insulin demand while strengthening economic ties with Russia.

The partnership could potentially reduce dependency on insulin imports and make this vital medication more accessible to the country's diabetic population.
