November 05, 2025 (MLN): Pakistan will host a two-day Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference (ISC) later this month to advance dialogue on peace, security, and sustainable development.
This was announced by Acting President Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani while addressing the inaugural dinner of the 28th Annual Sustainable Development Conference organized by the Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI).
He said the conference would bring together parliamentary leaders to align national legislation and development priorities with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to achieving the global agenda by 2030.
Speaking on the occasion, Gilani emphasized that the world, confronted with deepening uncertainty and inequality, must choose unity over division.
He said the SDPI conference theme, “Sustainable Development in the Emerging World Dis/order,” aptly reflects the present global landscape marked by widening economic disparities, digital divides, and environmental stress.
Despite contributing minimally to global carbon emissions, Pakistan remains among the most climate-vulnerable countries, he noted, adding that “sustainability is not a luxury, it is a necessity for survival.”
He called for enhanced South-South cooperation in knowledge-sharing, technology access, and regional development strategies.
Highlighting the value of parliamentary diplomacy, Gilani said it complements traditional diplomacy by amplifying democratic voices and fostering consensus on shared challenges such as terrorism, humanitarian crises, climate resilience, and transnational crime.
Concluding his remarks, the Acting President expressed hope that through joint efforts, the global community can transform “the prevailing disorder into an equitable, prosperous, and sustainable world.”
He also lauded SDPI for its continued role in advancing the sustainability dialogue in Pakistan and beyond.
