June 21, 2025 (MLN): The government of Pakistan has recommended U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, crediting his diplomatic role in defusing recent tensions between Islamabad and New Delhi.

A statement released on Saturday praised Trump’s "strategic foresight and diplomatic engagement," which Islamabad claims helped prevent a dangerous escalation between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.

The development follows Trump’s surprise announcement in May of a ceasefire that abruptly ended four days of hostilities.

“President Trump’s intervention averted a potential crisis and demonstrated his effectiveness as a peace broker,” the statement said, referring to the U.S. administration’s behind-the-scenes outreach to both capitals.

While Pakistan maintains the U.S. played a critical role in halting the conflict, India has dismissed the claim, stating that the ceasefire resulted from direct military-level communication, with no third-party mediation involved.

Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri asserted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi made it “absolutely clear” to Trump in a recent phone call.

Trump, in a recent social media post, listed the India-Pakistan truce among several international disputes he claims to have helped resolve, alongside the Abraham Accords and other Middle East developments. “I won’t get the Nobel Peace Prize no matter what, but the people know,” Trump posted.

The proposal came days after Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal Asim Munir, met Trump over lunch, marking the first time a serving Pakistani military leader has engaged with a former U.S. president while a civilian government is in office.
