Pakistan reaffirms commitment to multilateralism, UN role in global peace

September 25, 2026 (MLN): Pakistan reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to multilateralism and the central role of the United Nations in promoting international peace and development.

This took place as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met UN Secretary-General António Guterres on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York, according to a press release issued.

The Prime Minister reiterated Pakistan's strong attachment to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and appreciated the Secretary-General's leadership, lauding his principled role in upholding the Charter across the organization’s work for the betterment of humanity.

The two leaders exchanged views on major regional and international developments, including the situation in the Middle East.

The Prime Minister stressed the importance of dialogue and diplomacy in resolving regional tensions and reiterated Pakistan's commitment to promoting peace and stability in the region, while reaffirming support for the Palestinian people's right to self-determination and statehood.

Shehbaz Sharif also sensitised the Secretary-General on the rising trend of Islamophobia, particularly in Pakistan's immediate neighbourhood, calling for effective international action to curb its prevalence.

The two leaders further discussed the situation in Afghanistan, with the Prime Minister highlighting the sharp rise in terrorism emanating from Afghan soil.

For his part, the UN Secretary-General commended Pakistan's leading role and strong voice at the UN, along with its contribution to international peace and security.

António Guterres particularly appreciated Pakistan's mediation efforts toward a peaceful resolution of regional conflicts and durable stability, as well as the country's role and sacrifices in countering terrorism.
