Pakistan invites Alibaba proposals to rationalise e-commerce taxation, balancing fairness

October 15, 2026 (MLN): Pakistan has invited Alibaba International Digital Commerce (AIDC) to propose ways to rationalise e-commerce taxation, balancing fairness with broader tax participation, as the two sides reviewed cooperation on the country’s digital economy.

Finance Minister Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb met AIDC’s leadership on the sidelines of the World Bank Group-IMF Annual Meetings 2026 in Bangkok, Thailand, according to a press release issued.

The talks covered digital payments, a cashless economy, and transparent delivery of social protection payments and targeted subsidies.

Senator Aurangzeb appreciated Alibaba’s support for SMEs, local brands and exports through Daraz and Alibaba.com.

Both sides discussed speeding up the Pakistan Single Window e-commerce platform and improving the tracking of cross-border payments and export proceeds.

They also reviewed cooperation on cloud infrastructure, artificial intelligence (AI) and tax administration, stressing integrated data systems, cybersecurity and institutional capacity.

The two sides further explored modernising Pakistan Post’s sorting systems and expanding agricultural exports to China through Alibaba’s retail network.
