Pakistan has enough wheat, shortage reports dismissed

May 20, 2026 (MLN): Pakistan has sufficient wheat reserves to meet national requirements, with ongoing procurement operations expected to further strengthen buffer stocks in the coming weeks.

The federal government has dismissed reports of any wheat shortfall as baseless, asserting that coordinated efforts between federal and provincial authorities are ensuring stable supply and price management across all provinces, according to a press release issued.

Authorities have directed relevant departments to improve transparency in stock reporting and maintain close monitoring of procurement operations to prevent artificial price fluctuations in the market.

Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain, made these remarks while chairing the 12th high-level meeting of the National Wheat Oversight Committee.

The meeting was attended by senior officials of the Ministry, provincial agriculture secretaries, representatives of PASSCO, and other relevant stakeholders.

The committee reviewed current wheat procurement status, carry-forward stocks, demand and supply situation, and the overall food security outlook.

Members were briefed on wheat stocks held by public sector agencies, ongoing provincial procurement operations, and inter-provincial movement arrangements.

The committee reaffirmed the government's commitment to protecting both farmers' interests and consumer needs through a balanced procurement and distribution strategy.
