Pakistan calls for bankable projects to turn climate pledges into action

September 25, 2026 (MLN): Pakistan has called for turning climate commitments into bankable projects and measurable outcomes, stressing that effective implementation requires sound policies, adequate financing and stronger project-delivery capacity.

Finance Minister Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb made the remarks at the Climate Implementation Bridge (BRIDGE) event in New York during the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

He said Pakistan has made progress in strengthening its climate policy framework and is working to mobilize financing through domestic resources, international financial institutions, capital markets and climate funds.

However, institutional fragmentation and a shortage of investable and bankable projects remain key obstacles to effective climate action, he noted.

Referring to the 2022 floods, the Finance Minister said some international support remained unutilized despite substantial pledges, highlighting the need for suitable projects and stronger implementation capacity at the country level.

He called for consensus on practical “no-regret” measures to move the BRIDGE initiative from dialogue towards implementation, with a focus on concrete projects and measurable outcomes for communities.

The Finance Minister’s engagements during the UNGA High-Level Week have focused on climate resilience, resource mobilization and international partnerships to support climate action in Pakistan.
