Pakistan advances peace efforts in Tehran amid rising US-Iran tensions

August 24, 2026 (MLN): Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi held talks with Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni in Tehran on Monday, focusing on regional peace and efforts to resolve the ongoing US-Iran conflict through diplomacy, according to media reports.

The meeting came as Washington prepared to announce tougher economic measures against Iran and countries maintaining economic ties with Tehran.

Pakistan’s military said Field Marshal Munir’s visit was aimed at supporting efforts for a “peaceful, lasting and comprehensive resolution” to the conflict in the Middle East.

Iranian state news agency IRNA reported that the talks followed the Pakistani delegation’s arrival in Tehran and were part of Islamabad’s continued diplomatic efforts to promote peace and stability in the region.

Pakistan has remained actively engaged with both Washington and Tehran, seeking to facilitate a lasting settlement following an interim US-Iran understanding reached in June.

US President Donald Trump also spoke with Field Marshal Munir last week ahead of his Tehran visit, according to Pakistani sources cited by Reuters. One source said Washington had urged Pakistan to use its influence to encourage Iran to return to negotiations.

The United States has warned countries against providing economic support to Iran, with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent scheduled to outline additional measures on Monday.

Washington has described the planned sanctions as an unprecedented financial campaign against Tehran, which has faced extensive international sanctions since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Iran, meanwhile, has warned that continued economic pressure could lead it to halt oil exports from the Gulf, raising concerns over energy supplies and shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

The latest diplomatic efforts follow an interim agreement signed on June 18, known as the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, which established a 60-day framework for Washington and Tehran to work toward a broader agreement concerning Iran’s nuclear programme and sanctions relief.

While direct military exchanges between the two sides have subsided in recent weeks, substantive negotiations have yet to resume.

Pakistan has repeatedly called for dialogue as the preferred route to resolving the conflict and said it is pursuing efforts through both direct and indirect channels to bring Washington and Tehran back to the negotiating table.
