Pakistan, Romania discuss expanding bilateral cooperation

November 28, 2025 (MLN): Pakistan and Romania signaled interest in broadening bilateral cooperation as Pakistan’s new ambassador, Ilyas Mehmood Nizami, met Romanian President Nicosur Dan after presenting his credentials in Bucharest on Thursday.

In the meeting at Cotroceni Palace, Ambassador Nizami and the Romanian president discussed the trajectory of Pakistan–Romania relations and areas where the two sides could deepen collaboration.

The ambassador highlighted Pakistan’s focus on economic growth, infrastructure development, and the energy sector, areas that offer potential avenues for joint initiatives and investment.

Romania, an EU member state, has maintained diplomatic ties with Pakistan since 1964, with cooperation historically spanning trade, workforce mobility, defence training, and technical support.

Pakistan sees Romania as an entry point for expanding ties with Eastern Europe, while Romania has shown interest in diversifying partnerships in South Asia.

The ambassador conveyed greetings from Pakistan’s leadership and reaffirmed Islamabad’s interest in strengthening bilateral engagement.

He also briefed President Dan on economic reforms underway in Pakistan aimed at stabilizing the macroeconomic environment and attracting foreign investment.

The interaction marked the first formal engagement between Pakistan's newly posted envoy and the Romanian leadership, setting the tone for future cooperation talks during his tenure.
