October 09, 2026 (MLN): Pakistan and the Netherlands have discussed expanding bilateral trade, investment and private-sector cooperation, with a focus on converting business interest into commercially viable partnerships across key sectors.
Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Senator Muhammad
Aurangzeb hosted a luncheon for a Dutch business delegation led by the Founders
Carbon Network (FCN), accompanied by Dutch Ambassador to Pakistan Robert-Jan
Siegert.
The gathering was attended by the Prime Minister’s Adviser
on Privatisation, the Governor of the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), the
Secretary Commerce and senior Finance Division officials.
Addressing the delegation, Aurangzeb stressed the importance
of stronger business-to-business engagement between the two countries, noting
that sustained interaction could help identify investment opportunities,
establish partnerships and strengthen investor confidence.
He said Pakistan’s improving macroeconomic outlook provided
an opportunity to move beyond stabilisation towards export growth, higher
productivity, employment generation and increased private investment. He added
that structural reforms and greater mobilisation of private capital would be
essential to achieving sustainable economic growth.
The Finance Minister outlined the government’s priorities,
including preserving macroeconomic stability, strengthening fiscal and external
resilience, promoting inclusive growth and maintaining the pace of structural
reforms. He also emphasised the need to reduce reliance on aid by expanding
trade and investment, improve access to finance for small and medium-sized
enterprises (SMEs), agriculture and housing, and leverage digitalisation and
emerging technologies.
Aurangzeb highlighted Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserves
of $21.4 billion, which provide more than three months of import cover. He
stressed that maintaining the country’s improved external position and
strengthening its capacity to withstand external shocks would remain critical
to investor confidence.
He also identified rapid population growth and climate
change as major long-term challenges, warning of their implications for
economic sustainability, human development and national resilience.
Discussing bilateral cooperation, the Finance Minister said
Dutch technology, expertise and investment could support Pakistan’s development
objectives across key sectors. He highlighted public-private partnerships as a
means of attracting private capital, drawing on specialised expertise and
developing commercially sustainable projects.
The Prime Minister’s Adviser on Privatisation reiterated the
government’s commitment to expanding private-sector participation through
privatisation and public-private partnerships, with the aim of improving
efficiency, attracting investment and opening up opportunities for private
enterprise.
Meanwhile, the SBP Governor underscored the importance of
macroeconomic stability, external-sector resilience and financial-sector
reforms that support productive economic activity. He also highlighted
initiatives to facilitate trade, including the role of the Trade Facilitation
Board in resolving barriers and improving coordination among relevant
institutions.
Members of the Dutch delegation exchanged views on
Pakistan’s business environment and the potential for broader economic
engagement. Discussions focused on strengthening commercial links, identifying
areas of shared interest and developing mutually beneficial partnerships
between businesses in both countries.
The engagement highlighted Pakistan and the Netherlands’
shared interest in expanding trade and investment ties, while reinforcing the
government’s commitment to facilitating international investment and
encouraging greater private-sector participation in economic development.
