Pakistan, Iran agree to regular consultations

September 25, 2026 (MLN): Pakistan and Iran have reaffirmed their close, long-standing ties and agreed to work for regional peace, security and prosperity, with both sides emphasizng the need for regular consultations and close coordination to tackle challenges and seize opportunities.

The commitment came during a meeting between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, on the sidelines of the 81st Session of United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, where the two leaders underlined the need to further strengthen bilateral cooperation across all areas of mutual interest

The two also exchanged views on the evolving regional situation. Sharif voiced deep concern over the prolonged conflict in the region and stressed the need for restraint, de-escalation and sustained diplomatic engagement to secure lasting peace and stability, said a press release issued.

He underlined the importance of implementing the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and reaffirmed Pakistan's readiness to continue playing a sincere and constructive role in support of regional peace and stability.

Masoud Pezeshkian praised Pakistan's principled diplomacy and its efforts for regional peace and security.

He highlighted the enduring strength of Pakistan-Iran relations, rooted in shared history, culture and faith, and reaffirmed Tehran's strong desire to deepen multifaceted cooperation further.

Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif, Special Assistant Tariq Fatemi, along with senior officials from both sides, were also present during the meeting.
