Pakistan, Barrick discuss next phase of Reko Diq project

May 11, 2026 (MLN): Pakistan’s flagship Reko Diq Mine copper-gold project moved further into focus as the government and Barrick Gold reviewed ongoing progress and discussed the next phase of development aimed at advancing one of the world’s largest undeveloped mineral reserves.

During discussions held on Sunday, Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik and Barrick Chairman John L. Thornton exchanged views on efforts to accelerate work on the project and ensure timely achievement of key milestones, according to APP.

The petroleum minister described Reko Diq as a project of strategic national importance, saying it would help attract foreign investment, generate employment opportunities, and contribute to socio-economic development in Balochistan.

John L. Thornton reaffirmed Barrick’s commitment to the project and appreciated the continued support extended by the Government of Pakistan for the development initiative.

Under the ownership structure of the project, Barrick holds a 50% stake, while 25% is owned by three federal state-owned enterprises and the remaining 25% belongs to the Government of Balochistan.

Both sides reiterated their commitment to maintaining close coordination to ensure the successful development of the Reko Diq project.
