PKR stretches dollar gains to 220 consecutive sessions

August 18, 2026 (MLN): The Pakistani rupee extended its appreciation against the US dollar for the 220th consecutive session on Tuesday, with cumulative gains reaching PKR 3.8128, or 1.37%.

The local currency gained 1.06 paisa against the US dollar in the interbank market to settle at PKR 277.61, compared with the previous close of PKR 277.62.

During the session, the rupee traded at an intraday high bid of PKR 277.65 and a low ask of PKR 277.60.

In the open market, exchange companies quoted the dollar at PKR 278.00 for buying and PKR 278.65 for selling.

Against major currencies, the rupee strengthened by PKR 1.22, or 0.38%, against the euro to close at PKR 321.21 from PKR 322.43. It gained PKR 1.26, or 0.34%, against the British pound to settle at PKR 375.46 compared with PKR 376.72 a day earlier.

The rupee appreciated by PKR 1.94, or 0.56%, against the Swiss franc to close at PKR 341.95. Against the Japanese yen, it gained 0.87 paisa, or 0.50%, settling at PKR 1.7380 versus PKR 1.7467.

The local unit strengthened by 3.18 paisa, or 0.08%, against the Chinese yuan to close at PKR 41.17 from PKR 41.20. It also appreciated by 0.28 paisa against the Saudi riyal to PKR 73.94 and by 0.29 paisa against the UAE dirham to PKR 75.59.

During the current fiscal year, the PKR has appreciated by 54.92 paisa, or 0.20%, against the US dollar, while its gain so far in the current calendar year stands at PKR 2.51, or 0.90%.

In the money market, the benchmark six-month Karachi Interbank Bid and Offer rates increased by 1 basis point to 11.51% and 11.76%, respectively.
