PKR registers another gain vs USD

June 15, 2026 (MLN): The Pakistani rupee maintained its upward trajectory against the US dollar in Monday’s interbank trading session, extending its gains as it appreciated by 1.14 paisa to close at PKR 278.31 per USD, compared to the previous closing level of PKR 278.32.

During the trading session, the rupee moved within a narrow range, touching an intraday high of PKR 278.50 and a low of PKR 278.30 against the greenback.

In the open market, exchange companies quoted the US dollar at PKR 278.60 for buying and PKR 279.50 for selling.

While the local currency continued to strengthen against the US dollar, it posted losses against most other major international currencies. The rupee declined by PKR 1.03, or 0.32%, against the euro, ending the session at PKR 322.99 compared to PKR 321.96 previously.

Similarly, the rupee weakened against the British pound, shedding 81.96 paisa, or 0.22%, to settle at PKR 373.76 versus PKR 372.94 a day earlier. Against the Swiss franc, the local unit lost PKR 1.33, or 0.38%, closing at PKR 350.83.

The rupee also edged lower against the Japanese yen, depreciating by 0.11 paisa, or 0.06%, to PKR 1.7380. Against the Chinese yuan, it slipped by 2.94 paisa, or 0.07%, to settle at PKR 41.19.

Likewise, the local currency lost 2.47 paisa, or 0.03%, against the Saudi riyal, closing at PKR 74.17. However, it recorded a marginal gain of 0.72 paisa, or 0.01%, against the UAE dirham, ending the day at PKR 75.78.

On a broader basis, the rupee has demonstrated sustained strength against the US dollar. Since the start of the current fiscal year, it has appreciated by PKR 5.45, representing a gain of 1.96%.

On a calendar-year basis, the currency has advanced by PKR 1.81, showing an increase of 0.65%.

Meanwhile, activity in the money market saw benchmark six-month Karachi Interbank Bid and Offer Rates decline by 20 basis points, settling at 12.11% and 12.36%, respectively.
