PKR gains marginally against USD, closes at PKR277.6

August 19, 2026 (MLN): The Pakistani Rupee posted a marginal gain against the US Dollar in Wednesday's interbank session, appreciating by 0.86 paisa to close at PKR 277.60/USD, against the previous session's PKR 277.61.

The currency moved within a narrow band during the day, touching an intraday high of 277.65 and a low of 277.60.

In the open market, exchange companies quoted the greenback at PKR 277.75 for buying and PKR 278.65 for selling.

Despite holding steady against the Dollar, the Rupee lost ground against most other major currencies.

It weakened by 78.12 paisa against the Euro, closing at 321.99 versus 321.21 previously, and slipped 79.34 paisa against the British Pound to settle at 376.25 from 375.46.

The local unit also eased 43.22 paisa against the Swiss Franc to 342.38, and dropped 0.57 paisa against the Japanese Yen to 1.7437.

Against the Chinese Yuan, the Rupee declined by 2.96 paisa to close at 41.20. It fared better against Gulf currencies, gaining 0.23 paisa against the Saudi Riyal to 73.94 and 0.44 paisa against the UAE Dirham to 75.59.

On a cumulative basis, the Rupee has strengthened by 55.78 paisa, or 0.20%, against the Dollar in the current fiscal year, and by Rs 2.52, or 0.91%, since the start of the calendar year.

In the money market, the benchmark 6-month KIBOR bid and offer rates rose by 3 basis points each to 11.54% and 11.79%, respectively.
