PKR extends rally, appreciates 3 paisa versus USD

June 09, 2026 (MLN): The Pakistani rupee continued its upward trajectory against the US dollar on Tuesday, marking another session of appreciation in the interbank market amid stable foreign exchange conditions.

The local currency closed at PKR 278.37 per dollar, strengthening by 3 paisa from the previous close of PKR 278.40.

During the trading session, the rupee moved within a narrow range, touching an intraday high of PKR 278.35 and a low of PKR 278.40 against the greenback.

The latest advance adds to the rupee's recent positive performance, with the currency having gained Rs5.39, or 1.94%, against the US dollar during the current fiscal year.

On a calendar-year basis, the rupee has appreciated by Rs1.75, reflecting a gain of 0.63%.

In the open market, exchange companies quoted the dollar at PKR 278.60 for buying and PKR 279.50 for selling.

While the rupee posted gains against the dollar, it traded mixed against other major currencies.

The local unit weakened against the euro, closing at PKR 321.15 compared to PKR 320.68 in the previous session.

It also lost ground against the British pound, which settled at PKR 372.10 versus PKR 371.10 a day earlier.

Similarly, the rupee depreciated against the Swiss franc and Chinese yuan, ending the session at PKR 349.19 and PKR 41.10, respectively.

Against the Saudi riyal, the local currency slipped to PKR 74.15.

On the other hand, the rupee recorded a marginal gain against the Japanese yen, closing at PKR 1.7375 compared with PKR 1.7380 previously, while it remained largely unchanged against the UAE dirham at PKR 75.80.

Meanwhile, money market conditions remained stable, with the benchmark six-month Karachi Interbank Bid and Offer rates holding steady at 12.25% and 12.50%, respectively.
