PKR edges higher, closes at 277.5 against USD

August 28, 2026 (MLN): The Pakistani rupee (PKR) extended its gains against the US dollar on Friday, appreciating by 1.31 paisa in the interbank market to close at PKR 277.50 per USD, compared with the previous session's closing of PKR 277.51.

During the trading session, the local currency traded between an intraday high of PKR 277.65 and a low of PKR 277.50 against the greenback.

In the open market, exchange companies quoted the US dollar at PKR 277.50 for buying and PKR 278.55 for selling.

Against other major currencies, the PKR gained 19.56 paisa, or 0.06%, against the Euro, closing at PKR 323.16 compared with PKR 323.36 in the previous session.

The local unit also appreciated by 1.78 paisa against the British Pound, settling at PKR 377.03 versus PKR 377.05 a day earlier.

However, the rupee weakened against the Swiss Franc, losing 79.72 paisa, or 0.23%, to close at PKR 345.09.

Against the Japanese Yen, the PKR gained 0.24 paisa, or 0.14%, closing at PKR 1.7394 compared with PKR 1.7418 in the previous session.

The rupee also strengthened by 0.38 paisa against the Chinese Yuan to settle at PKR 41.29, compared with PKR 41.30 previously.

Meanwhile, the local currency gained 0.15 paisa against the Saudi Riyal, closing at PKR 73.91, while it depreciated by 0.26 paisa against the UAE Dirham to settle at PKR 75.56.

During the current fiscal year, the PKR has appreciated by 65.99 paisa, or 0.24%, against the US dollar. So far in the calendar year, the local currency has gained PKR 2.62, reflecting an appreciation of 0.94%.

In the money market, the benchmark six-month Karachi Interbank Bid and Offer Rates (KIBOR) edged up by 1 basis point to 11.56% and 11.81%, respectively.
